We are currently working towards achieving the Silver award for this Quality Mark.

The academy successfully gained the EQualities Bronze Award in 2015 and is currently planning towards achieving the Silver Award in April 2020. We lead on numerous initiatives to promote both the diversity and disability agendas, all of which are well attended by students and supported by staff. Our Well-being Manager is Stonewall trained on how to offer LGBTQ+ support and in turn has trained a staff working group. As a result, we have established a LGBTQ+ ‘Diversity Group’ that has its own ‘confidential’ meeting space and a prominent notice board, displaying regularly changing topics. The key agenda item of our Diversity Group is a joint project in liaison with Reading University, looking at ways to improve the experience of secondary school for LGBTQ+ students. Furthermore, the group has helped establish three gender neutral toilets around the academy and have helped to write our Equal Opportunities Policy.

LGBTQ+ issues have been built into our Life Lesson curriculum, covering a range of topics such as, ‘Diversity’, ‘Identity’, ‘How do we tackle LGBTQ+ discrimination?’, ‘Gender Identity Expression’ and the ‘Dangers of Stereotyping’. Our LGBTQ+ students and their parents give very positive feedback about our support in this area.

In addition, our School Nurse leads a Well-being drop-in clinic to give information, advice and guidance to any students who have any concerns or questions regarding gender, sexuality etc.

Other groups that were established last year include a Young Carers' Group and a Girls' group.
